Dental implants are a great solution for one or more missing teeth. They comprise a titanium screw, which is secured into the jaw bone under local anaesthetic and, after bonding and healing has taken place, a crown is fitted on top.
Implants function in much the same way as regular teeth and are easier to care for than dentures. They are also permanent, so you don’t have to remove them at night or for cleaning. Unlike bridges, you don’t need any work done to surrounding, healthy teeth to fit a dental implant, and if looked after properly they can last for many years.
Like regular teeth, you need to look after your implants properly, cleaning your teeth with a toothbrush and floss or interdental brushes, and attending regular dental check-ups. Habits such as smoking can have a detrimental effect on dental implants and you should discuss this with your dentist before treatment.
Implant treatment is provided at our practice by Dr Mark O’Hara who has undertaken extensive post graduate training in implantology and prosthodontics. Consultations are available to discuss your suitability for dental implants as well as alternative treatment options to consider.
